How to Choose a Middle Name
Where do you begin when it comes to choosing a middle name for your child? There are hundreds of choices, and how do you know which one is THE ONE?
There’s no need to be concerned – just take a notepad and pen (or use your phone) to jot down the names that seem appealing to you throughout the week. Don’t do this in one sitting; sometimes, the finest ideas need some time to develop.
After you’ve compiled a list of alternatives, put them to the test by reading it aloud and writing out your child’s entire name so you can see how it looks.
Once you’ve refined your list a little, run through this checklist before making a final decision:
- What does the name sound like? Does it flow well and sound natural?
- Does the combination of syllables work well? Sometimes a long first name will sound best with a short middle name, or the other way around!
- Do the initials form a word? Even with the best intentions, if they do form a word, this could be a cause of bullying at school.
- What does a Google search come up with? While this might not be too relevant and things could come up later – are you happy with the associations that come up when you search for your child’s full name?
- Consider family – have you used a family name? If no, are you sure? I unintentionally named our second son after my dad’s uncle. He was quite pleased about it… but I’ve only met him once!
