TL:DR (too long, didn’t read)

Short on time? Ultimately, we decided that the best probiotic for baby was the Upspring Probiotic Plus Colostrum. You can check it out here on Amazon.

What are Probiotics?

Probiotics are helpful living bacteria that exist in and on our bodies. Sometimes our body’s healthy bacteria can get unbalanced (like after using antibiotics) and probiotic supplements can return that balance to normal. The idea behind baby probiotics is that babies don’t yet have the full amount of good bacteria in their developing systems. By giving babies a probiotic, we can help speed up their development of healthy bacteria and relieve their discomfort.

Most probiotics show the strength of their supplement using CFUs which stands for Colony Forming Units. The number of CFUs is the number of active micro-organisms in each serving of the probiotic. The higher the CFUs, the more probiotics your baby is potentially getting.

If your baby is suffering from colic, acid reflux or constipation and/or your doctor has recommended that you start using probiotics, we’ve done the research to help you decide which of these Top 5 Baby Probiotics will work best for your baby.

Best Baby Probiotics of 2021

Upspring Probiotic Plus Colostrum

Upspring Probiotic Plus Colostrum boasts 5 billion CFUs and 6 different strands or strains of probiotics.

This comes in powder form, and can be mixed with any liquid. It contains no sugar and is all natural, gluten-free and hormone-free.

It does contain dairy (as it is harvested from cows) so if your baby is allergic or sensitive to dairy you should choose another probiotic.

Upspring markets the colostrum in their product as an immunity booster with a “complete range of antibodies.” Some reviewers mention that they wish this product came in smaller servings for younger babies as it is hard to measure out the correct amount from the packets.

Culturelle Baby Grow and Thrive (With Vitamin D)

Culturelle is one of the pioneers in the probiotic market. They have packaged their baby probiotics in liquid form and added Vitamin D, at the level that is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (400 IU).

Culturelle does not disclose the amount of CFUs in their product but it contains two different strains of probiotics. It has no dairy (which is great if you suspect your baby may have a milk protein allergy or intolerance) and is designed for babies ages 0-12 months. Some reviewers said that it was difficult to measure out the correct number of drops.

Lovebug Infant Probiotics

Lovebug Tiny Tummies Probiotics are designed for younger babies, ages 0-6 months old. It contains 1 billion active cultures and multiple probiotic strains.

This probiotic also comes in powder form and is packaged into individual servings that make it easier to add to milk, formula or food. It is dairy-free, gluten-free, Non-GMO and allergen free. Some reviewers have said it causes problems for their babies with dairy allergies even though it is supposed to be dairy-free.

BioGaia Protectis

BioGaia was also another company early to the probiotic market. They claim to be the very first to create baby probiotic drops.

Their probiotic drops contain 100 million CFUs and one strain of probiotics: Lactobacillus reuteri. BioGaia drops have no artificial colors flavors, dairy or soy and use non-GMO ingredients. Reviewers complained that the product is not shipped in heat controlled packaging which made it go spoil more quickly than the expiration date.

Enfamil Dual Probiotics

Enfamil Dual Probiotic are very new to the market, but come with a brand name that many parents already trust.

Each serving of these drops contains 2.5 billion CFUs and two strands of probiotics. This supplement is easy to give baby by spoon or added to breastmilk or formula. Enfamil Dual Probiotics are free from artificial sweeteners, flavors or silicone dioxide.

What Is A Baby Probiotic And Why You Need One

A baby probiotic is a supplement that can help your baby develop healthy gut bacteria. The presence of this bacteria can relieve baby of many uncomfortable  stomach ailments including acid reflux, gas, constipation and colic.

Probiotics are simple to add to your baby’s diet as they are flavorless and can be mixed with drinks. Many of them come with additional healthy ingredients including Vitamin D and colostrum.

If your baby is suffering from colic, acid reflux, gassiness or constipation, it is very possible that adding this supplement to your daily routine could help.

4 Benefits Of Using Baby Probiotics

There are many potential benefits that come from giving your little one a baby probiotic including:

  1. Decrease in colic/fussiness: If you read reviews of probiotics there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that use of baby probiotics results in a quick and powerful decrease in colic.
  2. Help relieve constipation: Probiotics also help with the common problem of constipation in infants. One study done in Italy showed that babies using probiotics had significantly more bowel movements than babies who weren’t using a supplement.
  3. Reduce Acid Reflux: Studies have also shown that probiotic use can  decrease acid reflux or regurgitation in babies.
  4. Help with diarrhea and diaper rash: Another clinical study showed that probiotics were effective in “treating acute viral gastroenteritis in healthy children and preventing antibiotic associated diarrhea in healthy children.”   Children under two are prescribed more antibiotics than any other age group. The inevitable diarrhea and diaper rash that results antibiotic use can be prevented by adding probiotics to your baby’s diet.

3 Things To Look For In A Good Probiotic for Baby

There are a many different (sometimes confusing) options for baby probiotics. Reading the label can help you decide which brands will be most helpful and effective. Consider the following:

  • Number of CFUs: Colony Forming Units are the measure by which you know how many probiotics are in the supplement. The higher the CFUs the more possible healthy probiotics that will make it to your baby’s gut.
  • Number of Strains (or strands): A healthy digestive system has a variety of strains of probiotics. Probiotic supplements with several strains might offer the most benefit
  • Additional supplements included: Some baby probiotics include Vitamin D or colostrum. Vitamin D is a recommended daily supplement for babies. Purchasing a probiotic with built in Vitamin D is like killing two birds with one stone.

The Final Word

The probiotic market has grown dramatically as our understanding of gut health has increased. Baby Probiotics offer a multitude of possible health benefits for babies  and is a relatively easy supplement to add to your baby’s diet.

If you have a baby that suffers from any sort of gastrointestinal problems including: diarrhea, colic, acid reflux or constipation, a baby probiotic is an easy way you can help your child develop healthy bacteria that might solve their issues.
